They started from the bottom…and now we’re here

Not too long ago, my parents were just two Puerto Rican kids from the South Bronx…wondering how or if they’d ever make it. Some years and a couple of rough patches later, my father has earned both a Masters and a Doctorate, and my mother two Masters degrees.

Yesterday, they both stood in front of hundreds of people and handed me my Bachelor of Science diploma. Everything that I have ever done is for them.

Thoughts leading up to Graduation

This week has been overwhelming for me emotionally to say the least. Days and nights full of awards ceremonies and Ram Rites of passage, all leading up to Commencement this Saturday. Encaenia stirred all sorts of ‘ponderations’ and musings within my already swirling/swimming mind. This past week and a half (this evening especially) I have had the pleasure of watching dozens of my classmates receive awards of varying prestige (but equal importance in my opinion) and heard, witnessed and experienced heartfelt words of gratitude and friendship, as well as watched all manner of drunken antics in/on/around rams and fountains all over campus. My newsfeed has also been flooded with the accomplishments of past classmates from all points of my life, proving I know a hell of a lot of smart people. lol These things are all pleasingly and starkly contrary to the depictions of my (our) generation in the media, and how I have witnessed and heard many adults (some whom I know, and some whom I do not) describe us. Entitled. Lazy. Unmotivated. Narcissistic. Unoriginal. Shallow. Generally unsavory. But no, this isn’t what I’ve seen at all. Sure, a lot of us are sort of self centered assholes…but what 20-something year old isn’t slightly self centered? What person in general isn’t? My fellow members of the class of 2013 have all proven themselves to be dedicated researchers, honor society members, recipients of all manner of fellowships, passionate advocates for social justice in all imaginable facets, teachers and friends…despite all the foolishness that sometimes comes with being an emerging adult. To all of my fellow 2013’ers, those who have graduated already and those who haven’t quite yet…and those who are Rams and those who aren’t….congratulations on making it. Perhaps it was all the free champagne I consumed, perhaps just the banging awards everyone was winning tonight. Maybe both? I dunno. But the next 36 or so hours are going to be the most unpredictable and emotional I’ve experienced yet, so I’m going to try to make em count. Much love and luck to all of you awesome people. Cheers.
